Lesson 1 / 3
Meet the alphabet
Open the alphabet guide and study its first group of letters and sounds. Yiddish is written from right to left using the Hebrew alphabet with its own spelling conventions.
Try it
Copy five entries from the guide, keeping the sound information next to each form.
Review your work
Hebrew reading experience can help with shapes, but Yiddish pronunciation and spelling require their own study.
Lesson 2 / 3
Read a little, check a little
Use the guide’s examples. Work through a small group, then cover its reading aids and try again.
Try it
Read or identify five examples, checking after each attempt. Keep a short list of the forms you mix up.
Review your work
Follow the guide’s conventions consistently while beginning.
Lesson 3 / 3
Meet a wider literature
Explore the Book Center collections. Select one book or oral-history item and inspect its title, creator, and accompanying description.
Try it
Record its title, source link, and one question you would like further Yiddish study to help you answer.
Review your work
Collection exploration adds cultural context; a description in translation is not proof you can yet read the original.
