Lesson 1 / 3
Meet the alphabet
Open the Hebrew alphabet resource. Hebrew is read from right to left. Study five letters at a time, noting each shape and the pronunciation given by the source.
Try it
Copy five letters. Cover the names and identify each shape, then check the source.
Review your work
Recognition comes before speed. Revisit any pair you confuse.
Lesson 2 / 3
Listen, notice, repeat
Use the source’s pronunciation guidance. Mark the difference between a letter name and the sound it represents. Vowel marks and context help readers pronounce words.
Try it
Make five cards: letter on one side, name and source pronunciation on the other. Review in a different order.
Review your work
Do not assume that knowing a letter’s name means you can yet read every word containing it.
Lesson 3 / 3
A first encounter with Torah
Open Genesis 18 on Sefaria with Hebrew and a translation visible. Locate a letter you recognize in the first verse. Read the translation to understand the scene.
Try it
Find three familiar letters and note their positions. Write one question about the passage and one about its language.
Review your work
Use the translation for meaning at this stage; recognizing letters is not yet independent translation.
